Shakespeare's favorite
What sport shall we devise here in this garden/To drive away the heavy thought of care?" Richard II 3.4, 1-2.
We, as humans, have certainly devised many diversions to while away the hours and stave off desperation and depression. Is football the sport we have devised? Basketball? Baseball? My personal favorite is baseball, the most literary of all the sports, yet this blog and the company of bloggers has increased my love of football. My students love basketball, as does my brother, Johnny. The fast paced grace, the back and forth, the jumps, dunks, passes, three point shots, not to mention, the sexual between-the-lines connotations of balls entering baskets (sorry). Yes, we are out here in cyberland, reading and awaiting the Sweet Sixteen (sex, again?). By the way, today there is figure skating for those of us who made ice skating rinks in our backyards. This is Victor's favorite sport, NOT. I, on the other hand, am a frustrated figure skater and enjoy watching what has to be the most difficult of all the sports.

I had never given much thought to the sexual connotations of basketball prior to your post! But I guess throwing balls in hoops is closer than swatting balls with bats, kicking balls, or carrying balls across two-dimensional lines :) For my money, I have to give the gold medal for sheer athletic difficulty to olympic-level gymnastics, where full-body strength, agility and performance are so honed that the slightest error can render a nearly impossible feat worthless. But would agree that figure skating is way up there. Love, rob
